Explore MRI imaging of the hippocampus, focusing on its anatomy, planning for seizures, and blood supply.
Highlights
- 🧠Imaging anatomy of the hippocampus is vital for understanding seizures.
- 📸 Coronal T2 sections reveal surrounding structures of the hippocampus.
- 🗺️ The hippocampus comprises three parts: head, body, and tail.
- 🔬 Microscopic anatomy includes regions such as CA1, CA2, CA3, and subiculum.
- 💉 Blood supply is primarily from the posterior cerebral artery.
- ⚙️ MRI planning involves axial and coronal cuts for detailed visualization.

IMAGING ANATOMY OF HIPPOCAMPUS
Temporal lobe:
- The surrounding structures of hippocampus are Superior temporal gyus , Middle temporal gyrus s and inferior temporal gyus.
These are the three temporal gyri which constitutes lateral temporal lobe
- Superior middle and inferior together will constitute lateral temporal lobe
- The other part of the temporal lobe will be mesial temporal lobe or medial temporal present medial to inferior temporal sulcus
- Contains: The lateral temporal occipital gyrus, the fusiform gyrus and para hippocampal gyus adjacent to hippocampus
MRI BRAIN PLANNING
MRI brain plan it with sagital so first we'll see temporal lobe this is sagital T2 weighted image once we see the temporal lobe go medially we'll start seeing the lateral ventricle and this gray structure in the lateral ventricle this is the lateral ventricle so once we go even more medially we can see the sausage shaped gray matter this is nothing but the hippocampus so along the axial length of hippocampus we have to plan the axial section here we have lateral ventricle posterior to it. Axially along the long axis of hippocampus in this plane we'll plan the axial cuts so parallel to the hippocampus we'll plan the axial Cuts.To this line perpendicularly we'll plan the coronal Cuts and then we'll acquire the MRI
PARTS OF HIPPOCAMPUS
Hippocampus has three parts head body and tail we'll see the parts on axial section simultaneously all the three parts differ in morphology on axial Cuts anteriorly
The body of the hippocampus on coronal section the body it is a folded two layered gray matter
MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY OF HIPPOCAMPUS
Parts of hippocampal body how it is divided based on microscopic Anatomy so parts of hippocampal body connecting the hippocampus to parahippocampal gyus
- We have the subiculum
- First part of the hippocampal body is CA1. CA stands for cornu ammonis which is the other name given to the hippocampus
- Next we have CA2, CA3 and
- The internal CA4 area is otherwise known as the dentate gyrus hippocampus is nothing but two layered gray matter as shown in Gray here subiculum ca1 ca2 ca3 and dentate gyrus this this white matter small white matter here is the fimbria and the white
- Hippocampus is the allocortex - having 3 cellular layers
- Parahippocampal gyus which is neo cortex we know that there are six layers
- In between these two there is subiculum which is a transitional area which can have four to five layers
